Port Authority temporarily bans homeless outreach team from PATH hub in Jersey City
JERSEY CITY – Mayor Steve Fulop and Hudson County Freeholder Bill O’Dea are accusing the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey of making it harder for county officials to help Journal Square’s homeless population.
The county has a volunteer homeless outreach team that heads to the PATH hub and other areas of the city on winter nights to bring homeless people to shelters or warming centers. This week, Port Authority officials told the county that its team needs a legal agreement with the Port Authority before it can perform outreach on agency property.
The Port Authority informed Hudson County of its decision yesterday, hours before it began to snow and temperatures dipped to 30 degrees. O’Dea is livid.
“They decided to kick them out on a snowy day,” O’Dea told The Jersey Journal. “This probably brings them to a new low.”
