Homeless shelters running out of room

On the heels of the annual count of individuals and families experiencing homelessness throughout the state, local shelters are struggling to find space for those who are in dire need.

Results are still being tallied from the statewide NJ Counts 2016 point-in-time count, which was conducted in all 21 counties in January and organized by Monarch Housing Associates.

Dawn Metzger, director at the Samaritan Inn in Newton, said that regardless of the numbers from the 24-hour study, the emergency shelter is at capacity with no additional funds coming in to help.
