2014 Skylands Triathlon ready to go at Spruce Run Reservoir State Park, Sept. 7

The 28th edition of the Skylands Triathlon is ready to go on Sept. 7. This charity event produced by the Rotary Club of North Hunterdon will again be held at Spruce Run Reservoir State Park beginning at 8 a.m.

This year’s beneficiaries will be Special Olympics and Operation “Chillout” (help for homeless veterans).

Athletic events for this year’s triathlon include Olympic and sprint triathlons, sprint duathlon, and aqua/bikes. These are wonderful spectator events providing an opportunity to see some of finest athletes compete in a beautiful parkland setting. The three basic triathlon events are 1/2-mile swim, 14-mile bike race, and a 3.1-mile road race. For the first time Olympic distance races will also be included.

In prior years the event has raised about $20,000 earmarked for various charities that have included scholarships for college bound students, holiday gifts to needy children, helping to build a rescue squad building, creating several parks and playgrounds, and assistance to families of men and women serving the military overseas.

North Hunterdon Rotary will contribute the proceeds of this year’s triathlon to Special Olympics and Operation “Chillout.” The local rotary club has made a commitment to assist in the running of Special Olympics, which gives physically challenged athletes a chance to have “their day in the sun.”

Operation “Chillout” is an organization committed to assisting members of the military who served our country, but have fallen upon hard economic times.

Individuals who would like to assist in the running of this year’s event, can contact Skylands Triathlon Chairman Chris Komosko
