Trying to end veteran homelessness in NJ this year

On the charming and pristine streets of Clinton Township, there are no homeless veterans, but for Mayor Janice Kovach, the tragedy of 58,000 U.S. veterans having to sleep in their cars or outdoors in the oppressive heat or bitter cold — weighs heavy on her conscience.

“Often, people only pay attention to what directly affects them at the moment. So many people tend to get wrapped up in the breaking news of the moment but forget about the day-to-day problems all around us. Veteran homelessness in our country just shouldn’t be,” Kovach said.

Kovach is one of 28 New Jersey mayors who have embraced the Mayors Challenge to End Veteran Homelessness by 2015 — a challenge issued by first lady Michelle Obama in June 2014.
