Veteran 3k at Centenary benefits Operation Chillout
HACKETTSTOWN — Kicking off the Veteran 3k at Centenary College, Mansfield Boy Scout Pack 222 lead participants in the pledge of allegiance.
Sponsored by the Students Veterans Organization of Centenary College and run by the freshman sports management class and the Phi Alpha Honors Society, the walk and race held today outside of the Lackland Center brought awareness of Veterans Day to students and the community with proceeds benefiting Operation Chillout.
Operation Chillout is local a grassroots interfaith coalition founded in 2000 by concerned volunteers to help a group of homeless Viet Nam veterans living in the open under a railroad trestle in northern parts of the state with the goal of providing emergency supplies and survival gear.
This is the first year the event was held to coincide with Veterans Day, as students select local charities to benefit from the race each year.
