Medical student saves homeless man during blizzard

NEWARK – A medical student from Essex County went out of his way twice during the blizzard to try to find a homeless man who had no where to go.

Rameez Ulhassan has been providing aid and comfort to Paul Boateng for about a year. Boateng has been confined to a wheelchair and living on the streets of Newark for the past few years.

On Thursday night, Ulhassan grew concerned about Boeteng and went to check on him, only to find him hypothermic and unresponsive. Boateng was taken to St. Michael’s Hospital, where he was treated and released several hours later.

On Friday, Ulhassan learned that Boateng was back on Newark’s street. When the aspiring doctor found Boateng, he gave him hot liquids, changed his shoes and called an ambulance.

Boateng, who has no immediate family, says he stays with Ulhassan when the weather gets too nasty.
