Lakewood Township removes Tent City structures in effort to shut down encampment

LAKEWOOD – Public works crews removed at least 10 vacant tents and trailers within a homeless encampment in Lakewood Wednesday.

The people who lived in them were relocated by the township as part of a court order.

“Tent City” residents say they welcome the cleanup, but worry about what’s going to happen in the long run. “This is not the problem. The problem is going to be when they come in, and the people are told they’re finally closing the tent thing town,” says Dave Jones. “The people who don’t have a place to go.”

The township’s ultimate goal is to close down all of Tent City.

Dozens of homeless people still live there and it’s unclear how long Lakewood and Ocean County have to relocate them.
